Many of company or human activities are exposed to weather risks, and specifically the success of outdoor event projects is dependent on weather condition. For hedging the risks, it needs to estimate the effect of weather on the revenue. In this study, the fluctuation of the daily visitor number of outdoor events is analyzed, and the relationship between a few weather elements and the visitor number is investigated. A simple formula for predicting the daily visitor number is derived from the result of the investigation. The formula is applied to simulate the daily revenue and the earning at risk of the outdoor events is estimated.

A weather derivative was utilized out of concern for unscheduled expenditures and losses in the international gardening and landscaping exhibition Japan flora 2000, in which the index was the number of days meeting with strong wind. In this study, the effect of strong wind on the decrease in the exhibition visitor number is investigated through the analysis for the correlation between the daily visitor numbers and the daily maximum wind speeds. The price of the weather derivative is estimated with the payout simulation using a theoretical formula substituted the wind speed data recorded in the past. The simulation result is compared with the contract condition of the weather derivative, and the validity of the contract deposit is discussed.

Numerous companies and organizations are exposed to weather risks, and their business profits are affected by various weather factors such as air temperature, rain/snow fall and sunshine duration. In this study, the relationship between the admission fee profit of a leisure facility and the wind speed is investigated. It is shown that in May the number of the visitors correlates with the monthly maximum wind speed, and that the visitor number decreased by strong winds can reduce the admission fee profit. A weather derivative using the monthly maximum wind speed as the index is designed to hedge the risk on the decrease in the profit. The payout with this wind derivative is simulated, and the effectiveness on the profit stabilization is discussed.

A supplementary method for expressway-tunnel ventilation using pressure fluctuation around running vehicle

This study proposes a method to assist the ventilation in expressway tunnels using air pressures generated around a vehicle running at high speed, in which the air can be exchanged between the inside and outside of a tunnel through a duct. A model of the time history of the vehicle-induced air-pressure is obtained from the results of field experiments. This model is applied to the boundary condition of the numerical simulation conducted to investigate the characteristics of the air flow in the duct, and to estimate the volume of the air intake from the tunnel outside to the inside.
